On the 23rd March 2021, the Athletics Carnival took place, Though it was very challenging everything went smoothly with Meehan taking the win! Throughout the event, we had 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500.

Inquiry is a time where students get the opportunity to do things other than their usual classes. In Term 1, there have been a variety of different options in Inquiry. These consist of Food Bank, Media Crew, Peer Support, Basketball, National History Challenge, Musical Group, and Crime scene investigations..
In Food Bank, they have been focussing on going to the Food Bank centre in Derwent Park to help disadvantaged people afford to pay for food themselves. Our students have been packing up food packages with the Food Bank to send out to homes.
In Peer Support, the Year 10s have paired up with Year 7s to help ease their transition into high school. They have been doing a series of activities and scenarios in order to help them understand what to do if they get stuck or need help.
The National History Challenge is a national challenge which students take part in every year. This year, students have been allowed extra time in Inquiry to work on their challenge in order to make their work to the best standard possible.
The Musical Group is one of the options in Inquiry as well. This is a group where students can express themselves in music and focus more on learning their instruments. This creates a good opportunity for students to do something that they enjoy and feel passionately about.
Basketball is also one of the options in Inquiry. The students are learning more about the game and certain tactics that they can use in the game. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn more about the game and have a physical option for inquiry.
Crime Scene is an opportunity for students to learn more about how crimes are solved and what evidence is collected. It gives students the knowledge about the key elements of a crime, what evidence is collected, how crimes are solved and what the layout of a crime scene would look like.
Last but not least there is the group of students working in the Media Crew. This small group of students will be working on providing you with content and updates here and elsewhere. Working with video programming, editing and blogging and other media. We look forward to providing you with regular updates as the year progresses.

On the fourth of September, students participated in footy colours day. This day is in support of fighting cancer. Students did a gold coin donation in support the charity. Primary students participated in a handball competition and a longest kick competition. Some of the Primary Students were even given awards for best dressed!

If you’ve been to Emmanuel recently, you may have noticed the large fences that block off the courtyard, which is in the process of being torn up. This is because the school is receiving some ground-breaking development, in the form of a shiny, brand new $690,00 courtyard.
The courtyard is being resurfaced, as the pavers were coming loose, and the roots of trees were growing rampant, presenting tripping hazards. All of the problematic trees are being removed from the courtyard, and the pavers are being replaced.
The courtyard is being remade with the goals of beautification and functionality in mind. Because of this, the courtyard will have fake turf, as well as a mixture of aggregate and cement. The courtyard will be fitted with new picnic tables, and the two large trees near the library will be kept in their positions. It should be noted that a water feature was planned, but was ultimately deemed too expensive and scrapped.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How long will the courtyard take to be built? Building commenced on the 27th of July, and, assuming all goes well, will be done in 16 weeks of the construction beginning.

A couple of weeks ago the ECS student leaders had the opportunity to attend the GRIP leadership conference, chaperoned by the amazing Mrs Berry. Mr Smith was the other responsible adult who drove us all there, which we’re grateful for.
GRIP is run all over Australia for student leaders from hundreds of different schools. The event was held in a function room at the DEC, and it was a pretty full room, there were about five or more student leaders from every school. At the start, there were a few ice-breaking games and fun introductions. The first statement made was, “It’s natural for people to look to others to lead the way.”
There were a few electives to choose from, so we made sure a few of our student leaders were going to each so that we could learn the most. In between socialising Tait even managed to listen into one that was running during our break time!? (Which the teachers spent inside eating good food…).
The electives were entitled:
Making Meetings Effective
Leading Exciting Events (my favourite)
Leading a Team of My Peers
Leading with Engaging Speeches
& Leading in Positive Partnership with Teachers
Some main points that made me think were the points about priorities and setting them. The speakers got us to think about where the priorities were in our own schools. This was to get the ball rolling so that we would begin to think about areas we may need to put more emphasis on, and also areas where or priorities may not quite be in the right place. For example, people before projects.
In the end, we were encouraged to walk around the room and ask other student leaders their main tips for leadership. The best one I heard was actually from someone I already knew….

Overall the day went extremely well, and I think everyone took something away from it. We all learnt some valuable skills for leadership and were inspired by what we’d heard. Next student leader meeting we were all bustling to organise events and get peoples opinions on our new ideas. In my opinion, Mrs Berry just learnt how to not give in to the copious amounts of requests to go to McDonald’s on the way home.
Be sure to look out for what the student leaders are doing around the school, and what changes they may be making behind the scenes, there is plenty in store!

The new year has brought many changes, and these have extended to the school! This article is going to look through some of the shiny new facilities and renovations that the school facilities have undergone!
First up on the schedule, The Home Economics room improvements! The Home Ec Room is the recipient of new ovens, benches, paint, and even a new fridge! These renovations provide home Ec students better opportunities to learn how to cook!
Secondly, the infant play area has been updated! The cubby house has been relocated, creating a large, open green space. This new open space provides ample opportunity for young students to run around, and build social skills and imagination.
The third item on this list is the library! The librarian, Mrs Ally, has had her desk moved, and the central space has been largely cleared. This creates an open and comfortable space for students to read and study, as well as more locations to keep books! A counsellor's office has also been added, so students have a place to chat with the counsellor!
The school is scheduled to see more improvements as the year goes by, so keep an eye out for building sites on campus!
